This book presents findings based upon eight case studies of inter-organizational forms, involving interviews with about managers and workers from nearly sixty employing organizations across many different sites of employment — the supplier, the client, the franchiser, the franchisee, the public purchaser and the private provider. The empirical material used is extensive and grounded. This major new book examines the way in which employment is managed across organizational boundaries. It analyses how public-private partnerships, franchises, agencies, and other forms of inter-firm contractual relations impact on work and employment and the experiences of those working in these increasingly significant forms of organization. This introductory chapter begins with a discussion of the blurring of organizational boundaries and fragmentation of work, which are increasing uncertainty and ambiguity in employment relations. It considers popular accounts of new organizational forms and then turns to academic literature on fragmentation. This is followed by a description of the research project presented in this : Damian Grimshaw.
